INDUSTRY CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

Automobiles have become one of the most effective mediums of transport the world has ever seen. Since the automobile was first introduced in 1768, the industry has successfully adapted to consumer preference, as seen in 2015 when over 88 million vehicles were sold. With numbers set to reach 111 million by 2020, the sector continues to evolve at a strong pace.

Considered as one of the most durable industrial activities of the century, it is a market that has created millions of jobs over a number of decades.

Product expansion and innovation continue to push the boundaries of automotive design and manufacturing capabilities. Shifts in consumer buying behaviour have initiated extensive safety and fuel economy improvements and automotive sales have sky rocketed as a consequence. The advancement of software and electronics consistently challenge automotive industry leaders to build reliable, energy efficient vehicles that will meet the needs of future consumers.

OEM priorities. Given the increase in electronic content, OEMs need to collaborate with suppliers and experts outside the traditional automotive industry. Accomplishing this will require changes in the way OEMs function. For example, they may need to use venture funds to nurture and support companies that can innovate technologically, and provide access for more non-traditional suppliers, including hardware and software companies.

OEMs should also prioritise R&D and engineering projects to focus on those that offer the best value and differentiation and address new safety and environmental regulations in the most cost-effective way.

Supplier priorities. Suppliers should partner with innovative non-traditional automotive electronics and infotainment suppliers to utilise their speed-to-market and higher scale. These influential stakeholders should also rationalise their portfolios and strive to be among the top two or three suppliers for each of their “core” products. OEMs will be looking to their top suppliers to co-invest in new global platforms, and suppliers should carefully evaluate the opportunities in expanding their manufacturing footprint as their primary OEMs move towards single worldwide architectures. Early collaboration will reap long-term rewards.
