In a rare diplomatic coup,  California Governor Jerry Brown has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in an effort to spur on more Chinese investment in renewable energy.

"If you try to prop up dying coal mines or technology that belches toxins out the tailpipe then you're going to lose, and it's time we start winning," said Brown.

Xi further emphasised China’s economic impact and has encouraged California to promote ties on the local level in science, innovation and green development, according to a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry.

“China is making a substantial contribution, as are other places in the world, and we are stepping up the effort,” added Brown.
