The oil and natural gas industry supported more than 10.3 million full- and part-time jobs in the U.S, and added $1.3 trillion to the country's economy in 2015, according to a new study commissioned by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

The 92-page report, "Impacts of the Natural Gas and Oil Industry on the U.S. Economy in 2015," conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC (PwC), also found that the number of jobs supported by the oil and gas industry has increased by 500,000 since 2011.

"This study validates the role of the natural gas and oil industry in growing the U.S. economy and supporting more than 10 million workers from coast-to-coast," said API President and CEO Jack Gerard.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average wage paid by the natural gas and oil industry, excluding retail station jobs, in 2016 was $101,181 which is nearly 90 per cent more than the national average.
