India partners with Russia to build Bangladesh nuclear power plant

India is planning to collaborate with Russia on a plant in Bangladesh, according to the chair of the country’s nuclear watchdog. 


Dr Sekhar Basu said the two countries will build the 2.4 GW Rooppur plant in Bangladesh’s northwestern region under a 2014 agreement to work together on third-country nuclear projects.

The first of the plant's two pressurised water reactors (PWR) is planned to come online in 2023, with the second estimated at 2024-5.  

Under the terms of their collaboration, Russia and India will source materials, equipment and services from the local Indian industry.
