A solar energy plant has been built at the site of Chernobyl and is scheduled to begin operations within the next couple of weeks.

The one-megawatt facility costing over  €1 million is fitted with 3,800 photovoltaic panels and capable of powering a small town.

“This solar power plant can cover the needs of a medium-sized village,”  Yevgen Varyagin, head of Solar Chernobyl, the Ukranian-German company responsible for the project.

“Bit by bit we want to optimise the Chernobyl zone. It shouldn’t be a black hole in the middle of Ukraine.”
