Cooperative Energy has announced its plans to replace an existing plant is southeast Mississippi with a new 23 MW plant.

According to officials, the plant provides capacity to restart if there's a blackout on the grid. In many cases, power plants need existing electricity to start generation.

At present, Cooperative Energy generates and transmits power for its owners, 11 cooperatives in southern and western Mississippi.

Once completed, the plant is expected to start generating electricity in 2019.
