​1. What initially attracted you to recruitment and why did you choose to work at SO?

Having graduated from UST with BSC Major in Chemistry, I soon realised that I enjoyed speaking to people rather than working in laboratories. I first heard about recruitment at my school’s career fair, and though it could an interesting environment to work in.

I was particularly attracted to Spencer Ogden because of its global presence, multi-national culture and fast-track and clear career paths available to me.

2. When did you start working at SO?

 I started working at SO in 2014 as part of the graduate academy. I have been on the Built Environment team in Hong Kong since I have joined, playing a big part in setting up the Architectural and Property Development Desk.

3. How did you achieve the recent promotion to management consultant? What is your advice to consultants that are looking to take the next step in their career?

I set clear goals and targets each year and work hard to achieve these. It is also very important to stay positive, there can be some tough parts of recruitment and things don’t work out the way you hoped but it is important to try and learn from these rather than let them affect you negatively.

4. How has your manager helped you achieve this promotion?

There is regular communication between my manager and I, either on-the-desk or through regular catch ups. My manager has been very supportive through periods where I have struggled with my job. My successes have been well recognised at SO and I have been rewarded with incentive lunches and other events.

5. What training has SO offered you to support your personal growth to date?

I joined SO as a trainee and completed the SO training academy, which taught be the theory of recruitment. Training didn’t stop there and I was offered two other training programmes last year, Emerging Leaders and High Performing Leaders.

6. Recruitment has its challenges - how do you stay motivated?

To achieve your goals, it is crucial to always believe in yourself. Keep working hard to become a better version of yourself and believe that you can achieve your goals, this will allow you to stay positive and motivated.

I have qualified as a top biller for the last two years and am hoping to qualify again this year which has meant that I have been rewarded with incredible trips to Fiji and Queenstown.

Currently, I am managing Winne who is one of the rising stars in the Hong Kong office and seeing her successes definitely helps keep me motivated!

7. What advice would you give a graduate considering a career in recruitment?

Have an open-mind and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You’re allowed to make mistakes when you’re learning things about a new industry and you will learn from these mistakes. If you stay positive and work really hard, you will start to see successes.
