When did you start working at SO?

I started working at SO in August 2018, with no recruitment experience I joined the SO Academy. I joined the Oil and Gas contract team, specialising in Marine.

What initially attracted you to recruitment and why did you choose to work at SO?

The recruitment cliché is correct, “no day is ever the same” because you get to speak to such a variety of different clients and candidates. Saying that, I do have a daily structure that I stick to. In the morning I focus on business development with new clients and growing relationships with my current clients. At the beginning of the afternoon I spend an hour or so on admin, and then I move onto sourcing new candidates and building my talent pool and contractor management.

What is the most rewarding part of your job at SO?

For me it’s the recognition. I am constantly recognised for the work that I am putting in through: deals, promotions, incentives, career opportunities and financial rewards. I would have never imagined that I would be rewarded and earning what I am at the age of 19 (nearly 20!) and I’m hoping to own my first flat in London by the end of 2020.

How did you achieve the recent promotion to principal consultant? What is your advice to consultants that are looking to take the next step in their career?

Initially when I joined Spencer Ogden it was the continuous hard work and the recognition I received motivated me to continue working harder and harder. I set personal goals for myself and strived to achieve things that the successful top billers at the time were achieving.

I focused on building out my clients and strong candidate network, in order to support my growth. This has allowed me surpass my targets quickly and achieve my latest promotion to principal consultant.

The advice I would give to consultants that are looking to take the next step in their career is to continue to work hard day-to-day, some days will be hard but the rewards balance out those tough days.

What training has SO offered to you to support your personal growth to date?

I have received constant training throughout my first 18 months at Spencer Ogden which is going to continue throughout my whole career here. I joined the Academy when I first started, the training was second-to-none and they taught me everything I needed to know to be make a successful start in my career in recruitment.

I have regular training with my manager who is always available to offer support and ensure that I am meeting my goals.

What are some of the challenges faced during your time at SO?

As I mentioned earlier, one of my main focuses was growing my current clients. I had a scenario where one of my clients grew at a rate that was so quick that at the time I struggle with all the candidate management required. However, I quickly learnt that all I needed to do was to re-structure my day to overcome the challenge I was experiencing.

Why did you choose recruitment? and why SO?

I had a family friend that has a successful career in recruitment and was telling me about the industry. I interviewed at Spencer Ogden and from the interview stage I could tell the environment was one that I wanted to work in. When I started at SO the training was very beneficial, I fell in love with the culture and realised that the career progression and earning potential was limitless.

What advice do you have for anyone that wants to working in the recruitment industry?

If you want to achieve your goals and be successful in such a short space of time, just keep working hard but make sure you have fun with it.
