AEP Ohio to expand its SMART grid with $290m plan
18 Sep 2013
The subsidiary of American Electric Power, AEP Ohio has put forward a $290 million plan with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to expand its gridSMART smart grid programme to communities across the Ohio service territory.
The submitted plan includes installation of advance metering infrastructure to approximately 900,000 consumers, distribution automation circuit reconfiguration (DACR) to boost the consistency of 250 distribution circuits; in addition to optimization of volt/VAR (VVO) to gain more control over the voltage of 80 distribution circuits.
These modernized smart grid systems can help identify damage from extreme weather more accurately and can ultimately support faster restoration times, something that has become increasingly important following super storm Sandy in 2012.
