Downer EDI, the engineering group, has won $2 billion contract for work on Adani Group’s Carmichael Coal Mine project in Central Queensland.
Under the contract, which will last between five to seven years, will see Downer build mine infrastructure and provide services including drilling and blasting, as well as coal and waste haulage to and from the mine.
Downer will also be responsible for engineering, procurement and construction of on-site infrastructure and preparatory civil works.
The Carmichael Coal mine, worth $10 billion, will be one of the biggest thermal coal mines in the world. The deal will be one of the largest of its type that has been signed in Australia in recent years.
The project will deliver vital export opportunities for Queensland, 10,000 jobs, $22 billion in taxes and royalties to be invested right back into front-line services across the state. It will also provide crucial work opportunities for small and medium sized businesses.
