EnergyWorks plant in Spain sees control system upgrade

25 Jul 2013
Emerson Process Management, the American power equipment manufacturer, has upgraded the Oviation control systems at the combined heat and power plant, EnergyWorks in Cartagena, Spain.

Owned by Iberdrola, the EnergyWorks Cartagena is a 95MW CHP Plant, driven by two GE gas turbines, which supplies heat as steam to a neighbouring plastic production facility, the SABIC polycarbonate manufacturing plant.

The migration project was completed during a scheduled 10-day outage, and without interrupting the supply of steam to a neighbouring factory. Emerson completed the control system upgrade at Cartagena in two phases to minimize lost revenue to Iberdrola, who owns eight combined cycle turbine power plants in Spain.

The Ovation control systems which were installed in February 2012, have had positive feedback, with the plant’s availability and efficiency maximised, whilst the aster system response allows the plant to react more quickly to changes in demand.
