Germany breaks renewable energy record: Produces 35% of electricity from renewables in 2017

05 Jul 2017

According to the BEE renewable energy association, Germany has generated 35 percent of its power from renewable energy sources in the first half of 2017.

The BEE reported the overall share of wind, hydro and solar power that was produced by Germany climbed to a record 35 percent in the first half of the year.

In comparison to other countries, Germany is a renewable energy all star. On a particularly sunny and windy day in April, Germany's mix of solar, wind, biomass and hydropower produced an impressive 85 percent of the country's electricity.

Currently, the European Union has a target of sourcing 20 percent of its energy needs from renewables by 2020.
