Green energy now the second largest generator of electricity in the world

20 Nov 2015

Renewable energy accounted for almost half of all new power plants last year, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

“It is no longer a niche. Renewable energy has become a mainstream fuel, as of now,” said IEA executive director, Fatih Birol.

The sector attracts 60% of all investment, and is set to overtake coal in the early 2030s.

The IEA said investment in oil exploration and production was set to fall by 20% in 2015, as high cost projects in the US, Canada, Russia and Brazil continue to be shelved.
