Hitachi installs 5MW turbine in Japan

25 Mar 2015

Hitachi Ltd has completed the installation of a 5MW downwind offshore wind turbine in the Ibaraki prefecture in Japan.

Hitachi began developing the turbine in July 2012 with the aim of building a machine that would be able to operate successfully in typhoon conditions.

The HTW 5.0-126 machine is expected to undergo a series of tests following several delays in its installation. The turbine is equipped with a permanent magnet-generator, medium sized gearbox and has a rotor diameter of 126m.

The turbine joins Hitachi’s existing 2MW downwind turbine that is operating at two sites in Fukushima and Nagasaki prefectures.
