18 Jun 2013

IFC Study Reports Over 60% of Geothermal Wells Drilled Globally are Successful

The International Finance Corporation has released a new report called “Success of Geothermal Wells: A global study” with data taken from both public and private sources covering the past four decades. The report details the success of drilling geothermal wells from a Global Study carried out on behalf of IFC, with input by GeothermEx, by compiling data from 2,613 wells, such as completion date and power capacity.

The report analyses this data to form a better understanding of the probability of drilling a successful well, and the factors that can influence this success. This report will obviously interest geothermal developers as well as financers involved with such projects.

IFC notes that this is the first global database of wells in geothermal fields which together supply power to 71% of the world’s installed geothermal electricity generating capacity, making it the largest database of its kind.
