India releases ambitious offshore wind plans

12 Sep 2014
India is set to finalise its first offshore wind farm sites by the end of the year, and will introduce a policy targeting 1 gigawatt of energy by 2020.

The move follows in the footsteps of Europe’s success in generating power at sea, and the huge advancements in technology have made offshore wind projects like these more viable.

India, which already has installed 21 gigawatts of wind power, is looking to the European Union for advice on how best to develop these farms at sea, as wind farms on land face limitations, largely due to poor road networks.

Estimations show that by 2018, the cost of electricity from offshore farms will equal that of land-based projects, and these ambitious plans demonstrate the country’s steps towards achieving this.
