Japan's 1st geothermal plant in 15 years opens next month

19 Mar 2014
Japan’s first new geothermal power plant in 15 years will open next month, located on the southern island of Kyushu – an area famed for its natural hot springs and volcanic activity.

The plant is the first to open in Japan since 1999 and several other companies are following suit and setting up geothermal projects across the country, including Toshiba and Orix.

Toshiba and Orix set up a joint geothermal power generation company at the end of 2013, with the goal of opening their first project next year.

Similarly, the company behind the new project, Chuo Electric Power Co, has set up a dedicated company devoted to geothermal activities and plans to open five further plans over the next five years.
