Iberdrola has contracted Landis+Gyr to supply smart energy meters for the utility’s deployment in Spain. The rollout is part of the STAR1 project’s third phase, which was initiated in 2010 and calls for 1,000,000 smart meters to be installed this year.
Javier Jiménez, Landis+Gyr chief executive officer for Spain and Portugal notes, “This success confirms Landis+Gyr’s position as a leading provider of smart metering solutions to Spanish utilities. We are proud that Iberdrola, one of the largest energy companies in the world, has recognized the value of Landis+Gyr smart metering products for the modernization of the Spanish grid. Smart metering will allow Spanish households to play an active role in energy efficiency. Our successful participation in the initial pilot phase in Castellón and further deployments throughout 2011 were critical to securing this major contract. We are proud we continue to be among the top providers chosen to manage energy more efficiently.”
This latest contract continues Landis+Gyr’s relationship with Iberdrola. In 2007, the companies partnered to establish specifications for a public, open, non-proprietary power line communication standard under the PRIME Project, which was established in response to Spain’s Smart Metering Royal Decree that stipulated that smart metering infrastructure must deployed by 2018.
Currently, Landis+Gyr has received orders for more than 300,000 smart meters and a significant number of smart grid solutions for secondary substations.
Jiménez adds: “Our plans for the future are ambitious. Landis+Gyr is well positioned to provide not only top quality smart meters but also end-to-end solutions and services to energy utilities of all sizes in the Iberian peninsula, helping them secure their investments in smart meter and smart grid deployments.”
