Mauritania's mines minister discusses the country's mining potential

10 Apr 2014
Mauritania’s Mines Minister, Mohamed Ould Khouna has spoken out about the country’s vastly under-developed mining potential.

He cites that the country has at least 2 billion tonnes of iron ore, with the crucial next stage being to ensure that this discovery is converted into production, and the country’s infrastructure will need development too.

Snim, plans to boost production to 40m tonnes by 2025 as part of a $6bn expansion, which would put Mauritania in the top five producers in the world.

In addition, the country has issued more than 300 permits for mining exploration. More than 70 companies have received permits to carry out exploration for everything from uranium to rare earth metals and diamonds.
