17 Aug 2011

A new book by Andres Carvallo and John Cooper gives readers an inside view on smart grid design, deployment, and management. Published by Artech House, The Advanced Smart Grid: Edge Power Driving Sustainability, comprehensively illustrates the smart grid’s origins, what it is today, and how best to actualize its potential.

Carvallo , Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for Proximetry, has 25 years of experience in the energy, telecommunications, computer and software industries. And co-author John Cooper is president of Ecomergence.

Tracy Trent, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Proximetry, says, “The Advanced Smart Grid illustrates in detail the importance of network security, interoperability and architecture design to successfully realize the investments to be made in modernizing the electric grid.”

The book has received endorsements from industry leaders involved in the Pecan Street Project, IDC, Utilities Telecom Council, Cisco Systems, Global Smart Grid Federation, and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, as well as academic leaders from the University of Kansas, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of California Los Angeles. Experts specifically single out the book as an important resource for understanding, architecting and deploying a functional smart grid.

William R. Moroney, who recently retired as president and chief executive officer for the Utilities Telecom Council, notes, “The Advanced Smart Grid is the visionary book on smart grids. It is the right book for these times. If you read only one book on the smart grid, you have already picked the right one.”

Guido Bartels, chairman of the Global Smart Grid Federation; board member and former chairman of Gridwise Alliance; and member of the Electricity Advisory Committee for the United States Department of Energy, enthused, “Carvallo and Cooper deliver in The Advanced Smart Grid a practical approach and candid opinions that bring clarity to the advancement of Smart Grid.”
