On-Ramp Wireless Partners on South Korean Smart Meter Deployment

17 Nov 2011

On-Ramp Wireless has signed an agreement with South Korean smart metering company Fountain Springs to deploy its advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution, Ultra-Link Processing (ULP), for Korea Telecom’s Smart Grid pilot on the island of Jeju as part of South Korea’s Smart Grid initiative, which will enable the utility to improve energy efficiency, lower costs, and accelerate deployment of Smart Grid applications.

The South Korean government has committed to transform the ways electricity is generated, distributed, and consumed to increase energy security, sustain economic growth, and better protect the environment.
Fountain Springs Chief Executive Officer, Dr. CS Hwang, says the ULP solution “provides enhanced coverage and capacity compared with existing PLC and Mesh AMI solutions. By deploying the ULP solution, we are able to provide a robust, high capacity integrated wireless communication system, truly changing the way electricity is managed and consumed in Korea.”

On-Ramp reports that its ULP wireless communication technology helps utilities manage power consumption throughout all end points of the distribution network. “The fully integrated ULP communications network supports thousands of meters per access point in challenging urban RF environments.”
Joaquin Silva, President and CEO of On-Ramp, notes, “Implementing our ULP technology, in conjunction with Fountain Springs and Korea Telecom, will completely address the meter density and capacity challenges of the South Korean environment. Our ULP technology reduces network and operational costs by up to 5x compared with competing systems, and will enable Korea Telecom to work towards their intentions to gain a large piece of the global Smart Grid market.”

On-Ramp Wireless developed the first wireless system purpose-built to efficiently connect billions of hard-to-reach devices in metro scale and its Ultra-Link Processing system enables low-power monitoring and control applications within Smart Grid, water efficiency, industrial sensing, and location tracking.
