Pepco subcontractor Scope Services is currently recruiting and training local workers to install smart meters in Prince George and Montgomery counties in a deployment scheduled to last through the end of 2012. Pepco also is installing smart meters in the District of Columbia and anticipates completing that deployment by the end of 2011.
Thomas H. Graham, President of Pepco Region, explains, “By the end of next year, we expect to have installed throughout Prince George’s and Montgomery counties more than 500,000 smart meters that will help customers better manage their energy use and costs. Once all of the advanced infrastructure features of the meters are fully activated, customers will be able to view detailed account-specific energy use information through Pepco’s My Account online service.”
Smart meters, the foundation of the Smart Grid, are part of the technology being deployed to help integrate renewable energy and electric vehicles. Since May, Pepco and Scope Services have worked with Montgomery Works and the Prince George’s One-Stop Career Center to train Maryland residents as contract meter installers and for administrative support positions.
Qualified candidates have been invited to attend a one day Smart Meter Deployment recruitment event, hosted by Scope Services, which will take place at the Health Sciences Center Building at the Silver Spring-Takoma Park campus of Montgomery College on Saturday, July 23.
According to Scope Services, the meter installers will be hired and trained to “disconnect, remove, install, and reconnect electric power meters that are used to record the energy consumption of residential and commercial customers. The potential benefits of the new smart meters will empower customers to control their energy costs, decrease the time associated with restoring power, and reduce the need for estimated meter readings among other benefits.”
Scope Services is a staffing specialist for commercial and energy-related industries. Pepco provides electric service to more than 789,000 customers in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
