Renewable energy breaks new records

26 Oct 2016
Renewable energy has overtaken coal as the world’s largest source of power capacity, according to the International Energy Agency.

While coal continues to generate more electricity, renewable energy accounted for more than half of new power generation globally, said the report. Last year alone, approximately 500,000 solar panels were installed every day.

It also said in the report that China "remains the indisputable global leader of renewable energy expansion, representing close to 40% of growth."

“We are witnessing a transformation of global power markets led by renewables,” said Fatih Birol, executive director of the global energy advisory agency.
