Renewable energy financing for Rwanda and Uganda

24 Nov 2015

Rwanda and Uganda will receive $50 million each from the Climate Investment Funds to support renewable energy plans.

The Climate Investment Funds seek to scale up financing through multilateral development banks towards low-carbon and climate-resilient projects.

In Uganda, where currently only 17% of the population has electricity access, the funding will help to advocate geothermal exploration, the building of mini-grids and the development of wind power.

Similarly, in Rwanda only 23% of the population have electricity access. By 2018 the country is committed to having this increased to 70%.
