Siemens has completed the second step of its German grid connection project with the installation of the BorWin2 offshore platform in the German North Sea.
The BowWin2 converter platform will convert the alternating current generated by the wind turbines into low-loss direct current for transmission to the mainland using Siemens’ HVDC Plus technology.
The BorWin1 onshore converter station will then convert the electricity back into alternating current before being fed into the power grid.
The projects which are being carried out for TenneT also includes all of the electrical equipment for the HVDC converter.
Siemens carried out the work in partnership with Prysmian Cables, who supplied and also installed the subsea cabling.
