Hayley Dalton, senior recruiter at Spencer Ogden NYC talks about why she chose a career in recruitment, and how she achieved her recent promotion with only 14 months’ experience.
What initially attracted you to recruitment and why did you apply to work at SO?
When I entered my senior year at Elon University, I still had no idea what I was going to do once I graduated. Recruitment wasn't even on my radar until around Thanksgiving, when another firm reached out to me asking if I was interested in an interview. During this break, I met with the company, and was excited about the industry, but not so much by their culture.
With my Psychology Major and Business Minor, recruitment seemed to be the perfect marriage of the knowledge that I acquired during my internships and time at school. I started targeting entry-level positions via LinkedIn across different industries; technology, healthcare, accounting - but Spencer Ogden had caught my attention the most. One intriguing aspect was the industry; renewable energy and clean technology in particular. Another was the seemingly entrepreneurial vibe to it. The advertisement had mentioned that they were building out an office in NYC so I thought it would be the ideal role where I could take advantage of many learning and mentorship opportunities.

The biggest component I initially took away from L&D was the Candidate Qualification and having control over your process. Qualifying the candidate is the crucial first step (i.e. motivations, testing flexibility, the 2-3 method) but controlling the process defines if it's going to be a placement.
What support did you receive from the New York office that helped you in achieving your goals?
After meeting with the majority of the team while interviewing, it was clear there were many opportunities at Spencer Ogden NYC. Not only was I excited about the career progression (and undoubtedly the money that comes with success) but it was the L&D, the mentorship, and the clear desire that I saw from Chay, Georgia, Henry, and the office for me to succeed.
This might sound cliche, but the saying "it takes a village..." applies well to this office environment. They quickly picked up on what motivates me to succeed on a daily basis and catered management styles to draw the best out of me. All three have sat in and gone to candidate or client meetings, setting a great example and providing targeted critiques on what I can do next time to improve. Everyone is so inspired and aligned with what this office is trying to achieve, so I can't help but feel the same.
What inspired you to continually pursue success and break your own records?
I like to make people proud. I am competitive. I love winning and I enjoy the acknowledgment of that. Most importantly, I'm competitive with myself. If I'm not constantly trying to set the bar even higher than I did before, then I won't progress as quickly in my career as I would like. Upon this recent promotion and my recent activity, I now feel the pressure and the excitement more than ever to be better and do better than I did yesterday. Additionally, it's hard to deny how motivating the money factor can be with the success that you achieve.
What advice would you give a graduate who is considering a career in recruitment?
In the wise words of Henry De Lusignan, if we don't have the right culture to support and mentor you, it doesn't matter how great your strategy is or how vast the opportunities are. Recruitment can be challenging, but it can also be the most rewarding. When considering this career, think long and hard about the company and the environment you're looking to join. I was between three different companies when making my decision, and I didn't hesitate to choose Spencer Ogden. The spirit of entrepreneurialism, the honesty and transparency in our work, and the learning and development that is provided are truly the best in the market.
