The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate reported that Statoil Petroleum has made an oil discovery near the Norne field in the Norwegian Sea.
Statoil is in the currently in the process of completing the drilling of wildcat well 6608/10-15, which is located approximately five miles northeast of the Norne field.
The primary exploration target of the well was to prove petroleum in Early Jurassic reservoir rocks. The secondary target was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic rocks. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said that Statoil found two oil columns of approximately 140 feet each in both locations.
Preliminary calculations of the size of the discovery are between six and 19 million barrels of oil.
