French major, Total has called time on its shale license in Poland.
This poses a further setback for the country’s plans to reduce its reliance on Russian energy.
The reason behind Total’s decision is that despite the presence of gas, the exploration area was not economically viable. Total has not ruled out further exploration for shale in the country and would consider shale opportunities in the future.
Poland had a major push into shale three years ago following the Prime Minister, Donald Tusk’s announcement that the country would seek to produce unconventional gas on a commercial scale in 2014, in a bid to reduce the Russian energy supplies.
