The UK rail sector is growing at a strong pace with the construction on the HS2 network scheduled to start in the next two years. Substantial investment is being pumped into rail improvement programmes and the expansion is generating more jobs within the sector.
The government has announced that it is looking to create 30,000 apprenticeships for the rail and road industry within the next five years. By 2020, the transport industry will require 55,000 skilled workers.
Several educational institutions are supporting the sector’s steady growth. In 2014, Newcastle College opened a Rail Academy that acts as a national training hub for rail engineering. The Academy assists employers who are looking to further develop their existing workforce and offers extensive training to engineering graduates.
