The US federal government has officially confirmed its largest ever purchase of renewable energy in a deal with the 150MW Mesquite Solar 3 desert array in Arizona.
It was revealed that Sempra Energy’s new array will provide one-third of the electricity needs for 14 naval installations located within the state.
"Today we're going to throw a switch and start getting those electrons flowing to our 14 bases," said Dennis McGinn, the assistant secretary of the Navy for energy, installations and environment.
The deal will let the Navy buy solar power at a fixed price for 25 years from the array, which is owned by Sempra Energy.
