Wartsila has signed a major contract with Shanghai Electric Power to convert the Maltese Delimara Power Station to operate on natural gas.
Wartsila is a leading global supplier of efficient and flexible power plant services and this contracts marks the first in the partnership with Shanghai Electric Power.
The Delimara Power Station is located in Malta and has a capacity of 140 MW. Commissioned in late 2012, the conversion project is expected to begin in January 2016, with efficiency and output anticipated to increase as a result.
The project will convert four of the power station’s eight Wartsila 46 engines into Wartsila 50SG engines, and the remaining four into 50DF engines.
Operating costs of the plant will be reduced as it moves from using heavy fuel oil to natural gas, as well as emissions produced by the plant.
