The Head of Engineering will be responsible for ensuring that the technical foundations underlying the organization's products are maintained and strengthened. They will represent product planning and engineering on the company's Executive Team. This is a cross-functional role. In addition to working with the CTO in guiding the technical direction of the company, the role involves close collaboration with the CEO, VPs of Marketing and Business Development, and team members responsible for customer experience, product management, and marketing. The right candidate will:

1.Lead the engineering team and development priorities, including:
*Work with product management to plan sprints and assign tasks.
*Check in with team members to assess any necessary changes in plan, assuring reasonable work estimates for the team.
*Provide systems-level guidance to team members regarding technical decisions.
*Participate in code reviews.
*Identify process improvements that increase developer effectiveness and happiness.
*Assess individual team member performance, and promote opportunities for growth and education.
2.Work cross-functionally to achieve the optimal balance between existing versus new product innovation and product development versus platform maintenance, including:
*Work with the product management and marketing teams to review the roadmap, plan upcoming work, and ensure reasonable technical expectations.
*Play a pivotal role in helping to determine how to include market and customer facing requirements into the development plan and road map.
*Assess the value and priority of technology stack changes, and discussing those recommendations with the development team and CTO.
*Bring an independent engineering perspective in stakeholder discussions, ensuring engagement by all appropriate participants.
3.Exercise leadership in an independent and entrepreneurial way, while remaining collaborative and collegial.



Qualifications
*4+ years experience as a development team lead with prior management and product planning experience.
*8+ years web development experience across multiple programming languages with a focus on agile, evolving, modular development processes.
*Demonstrable leadership role experience in a formalized product planning process for a portfolio of products that values customer experience, aligning development to market opportunity, and balances customer needs with longer term innovation.
*4+ years Ruby on Rails experience, preferred.
*A strong sense of urgency and the ability to navigate a rapidly changing landscape. Prior startup experience preferred.
*Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, a creative mindset, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
