  • Overview:

    As a Senior Protection & Control Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and implementing protection and control engineering activities for high voltage substation and transmission projects. You will utilize your knowledge of protective relaying and control systems to contribute to EPC substation and transmission projects.

    Responsibilities:

    • Perform analysis and design of Protection Systems for HV substation/ and FACTS • Develop substation relaying & metering diagrams (i.e. Single line/A.C./D.C. schematic diagrams) • Develop the substation communication and network diagram • Prepare specification & Bill of Material for Protection/Control/Metering/RTU/ Communication Panels • Develop Protection and Control Panel layouts. • Develop Protection and Control Panel wiring diagrams. • Develop Cable Schedule for Substation. • Perform Factory Acceptance Test for Protection and Control Panels. • Perform reviews of work performed by others • Work closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate overall design package and requirements • Perform relay coordination study and develop the relay settings file • Coordinate with supplier and contractors • Flexibility to travel locally and internationally to customer meetings and project sites, with an approximate travel of 25%.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a power systems emphasis from an ABET-accredited engineering program; Master's degree preferred. • 8 years or more of experience with a focus on protection/control/communications design for high voltage substations. • Experience in Communication Network Technologies • Experience in Communication protocols such as IEC61850, DNP, Modbus, … • Experience in writing and providing support documentation for relay calculations. • Knowledge on ANSI standards, IEC standards knowledge is a plus. • Experience with various vendor protective relay equipment typically used in substation. protection, including SEL, Siemens, GE. • Familiarity with Auto-CAD or Micro-Station. • Good communication skills. • Professional Engineering license is preferred. • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Excellent communication, task management and planning skills are needed, in addition to technical breadth. The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in the design, engineering and analysis of PV and BESS projects ranging from 1 to 500 MW as well as an in-depth understanding of the architectures and components to build such systems. The position can be at one of this company's offices or remote, and may include up to 25% travel to project locations and partner offices. Key Responsibilities Project Execution Provide electrical engineering support to project engineers  Electrical engineering design review of PV and/or BESS projects  Review of electrical test reports (MV/AC/DC cables, transformers, BOP equipment, etc.) and electrical system studies (Arc-Flash, Short Circuit, Load Flow, Grounding, Ampacity, etc.)  Standardize common approach to electrical calculations and reviews  Develop a checklist for project engineers to review design sets, specifications, test reports and studies  Project Scope of Work and electrical design standards development  Create and/or update technical specifications for the procurement of owner supplied equipment such as racking/inverter/BESS/PV module  Support utility interconnection scope for DG projects (1MW - 20MW) in execution phase  Seek and evaluate proposals for electrical engineering services  Support the coordination of engineering consultants to develop project construction drawings and support material  Review and comment on electrical design deliverables provided by consultants and contractors for the construction of projects  Respond to contractor/consultant RFIs (electrical)  Perform QA/QC field inspections and punch list development  Perform Job Safety Assessments and Safety Walks to identify job-site hazards  Review commissioning reports and analyze system performance    Project Development Technical project due diligence and project engineering design review  Equipment review and selection  Engineering Procurement and Construction contract support  Energy production and performance modeling for PV and energy storage systems  Assessment of model accuracy including meteorological assessment and P-50/P-90 analysis    Engineering Support Design optimization to maximize reliability, safety, and reduce cost  Review recent technology and companies for inclusion on the Approved Vendor List  Collaborate with Asset Management team to troubleshoot existing systems or develop repair and remediation plans    Growth and Leadership Improve and develop processes for the execution of safe, quality and high-performance projects  Mentor and educate team on changing trends in technology, best practices and safety  Review the work of project engineers and provide constructive feedback for improvement, and mentorship  Participate in growth planning process by contributing to process improvement task forces and other strategic planning activities   Skills and Qualifications Primary Qualifications Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical field  7+ years professional experience in solar PV system design, development, and construction  3+ years professional experience with energy storage systems design  Proficiency in PV system design, including 1-line and 3-line diagram conventions, NEC conductor sizing, overcurrent protection sizing, utility disconnecting means requirements, equipment selection, grounding methodologies and arc flash analysis  Experience with medium voltage and high voltage interconnection design  Comfort with NEC code, as well as related codes such as NESC, IBC, NFPA 855 and NFPA 70E  Ability to work in a team environment  Proficient with MS Office Suite   "Plus" Qualifications Graduate degree in Engineering  PE license  PMP Certification  NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification  Experience with PVSyst, ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD and other advanced modeling tools  Substation/HV design experience  Spanish language skills  OSHA 10-hr or comparable job-site safety certification

 This is the expert level of the Project Controls classification hierarchy. Workers at this level lead the development of the reporting systems for project controls assignments. They perform complex aspects of individual scheduling, change documentation and cost control while reporting up to program or portfolio level as well as trains and teaches other members of PC organization with minimal oversight and wide latitude for unreviewed work. They are also expected to have advanced skills using primavera (p6) and have the ability to work independently. This position typically is assigned to high volume of White projects classified per the Project Management Center of Excellence Project Profile Matrix which typically range from $100M to greater than $500M with a high level of complexity. Must have experience leading schedule review meetings and work with the project team to obtain information to build / update the project schedule. The Principal Project Controls Specialist may have relationships with individuals of varying levels in various organizations.
