Job FunctionResponsible for the testing, analysis and calculations related to the operation of equipment, instruments, control systems and relays. Performs tests, calibrations, maintenance and installation of distribution and interchange revenue metering systems, indicating meters, and electrical transducers. Supports metering equipment and maintenance program as required.
Relaying - Responsible for the testing, analysis and calculations related to the operation of equipment, instruments, control systems and relays. Analyzes data such as loading and performance of electrical equipment such as transformers, voltage regulators, circuit breakers. Makes mathematical calculations in accordance with established procedures such as are required in analyzing three phase AC circuits. Analyzes, tests, calibrates and adjusts relays and related circuits, electronic devices, meters, instruments, control circuits and similar circuits and devices. Analyzes circuits through the use of prints, circuit analysis and special instruments to determine proper operations. Performs and analyzes tests such as ratio and polarity of potential and current transformers; conducts control and relay wiring checks and circuit breaker trip checks. May be called upon to assume the lead role in the checkout of new equipment or a substation.
Metering - Supports metering equipment and maintenance program as required. Performs tests, calibrations, maintenance and installation of distribution and interchange revenue metering systems. Performs tests, calibrations, maintenance and installation of indicating meters and electrical transducers.
Journeyman Only - Arranges for and schedules outages on equipment to be tested; requests and accepts equipment clearances with prior approval of Relay Meter Supervisor.
Journeyman Only -Assists in the training and performance evaluation process of other employees.
AbilitiesUses hand and power tools as required in the work. Operates a company vehicle. Must be able to climb ladders, lift, and carry equipment weighing up to 75 pounds. Must have a valid driver's license. Must be able to work in remote locations and stay out away from home for periods of time. Subject to 24-hour call and occasional overtime, working in shop and field under occasionally bad weather conditions.
Experience and Education
Associates degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology from a technical school
Must have documented education in mathematics, microprocessor applications, digital and analog electronics, control circuits and power system electrical theory.
Must have working knowledge to test and maintain revenue metering systems, protective relaying, instrument transformers, power equipment such as breakers and transformers, and troubleshoot control circuits and associated wiring. Equivalent industry experience may be considered toward substitution of educational requirements.
Relay Technician II - minimum one year experience of related experience
Relay Technician III - minimum 2 years' experience of related experience
Journeyman - minimum 4 years' experience of relation experience
