The Senior Engineering Geoscientist will work as part of a team on engineering and consultancy assignments for a range of offshore and onshore engineering projects primarily in the renewable and oil and gas sectors, specialising in site characterisation and the development of ground models.
The Senior Engineering Geoscientist will be responsible for technical contribution and some project management aspects of projects and is also expected to support the development and generation of new business prospects.
Technical project work contributions will cover all aspects of the core business and will include:
- Terrain analysis and mapping, subsurface interpretation and geotechnical unitisation, all within a spatial GIS framework as part of a ground model development process.
- Geohazard appraisal and interpretation, assessment of consequence of geohazard impacts on infrastructure, and development of a quantitative risk assessment framework.
- Basic geotechnical analysis for foundation design and slope stability assessment.
- Site visits and contractor technical and HSE supervision (onshore and offshore), including travel globally.
Project management will be undertaken according to the project life cycle processes and will involve receiving and appraising invitations to tender, proposal preparation, contractual review and negotiation, subcontractor liaison and management, overall technical and commercial project oversight, client communication, invoicing and project closeout. Project management aspects of the role will be supported by the company’s administrator.
The Senior Engineering Geoscientist will also contribute to the growth of the business through the generation of new business contacts and new technical prospects. This will be achieved via a range of different approaches including: the development and use of a strong contacts network, attendance at industry events and active engagement with other attendees, targeted identification and connection with new client contacts, and exploiting existing project relationships to secure repeat business and an expansion of offered services.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Support ground model development for offshore and onshore developments in collaboration with the ground model team lead:
- Desk study data research, appraisal and collation.
- Terrain evaluation and mapping.
- Subsurface geophysical data interpretation.
- Integrated geotechnical unitisation and basic geotechnical analysis for foundation design and slope stability assessment.
- Geohazard appraisal and interpretation.
- GIS data management with a rigorous approach to data management, cataloguing received information, and consistent and clear formatting for data visualization.
- Development of report deliverables, including drafting of reports and preparation of illustrative diagrams, charts and graphs to communicate methodology and results.
- Contribution to other geoconsulting activities within the team, including quantitative risk assessments, geospatial analysis, and geotechnical characterisation.
- Provision of guidance and advice to other ground model team members and reviewing the work of others.
- Proposal preparation in response to new enquiries.
- Supporting and acting as deputy to the ground model team lead, and being responsible for both technical and project management activities.
- Contractor oversight on behalf of clients (e.g. site representative) and subcontractor management for East Point Geo consultancy projects.
- Attend regular internal meetings and external / third party meetings as required.
- Targeted business development which will include the identification of and attendance at appropriate industry meetings and events, development of existing contacts in the framework of this role and establishment of new contacts.
- Research and development of processes and workflows, which may include the repurposing of methods established in other industries which may be applicable to East Point Geo’s projects, and / or cutting edge new technologies which could add value to existing deliverables.
- BSc in Geology, Earth Sciences, Geography or other related subject.
- 5 years or more in a relevant earth-science related role.
- Knowledge of offshore engineering industries.
- Experience of geophysical survey and/or geotechnical data acquisition.
- Experience of interpreting geo-data and developing ground models.
- Excellent technical earth science knowledge.
- Proficiency with standard Office software, specifically MS Excel, MS Word and MS Powerpoint.
- Working knowledge of geospatial software (GIS), ability to understand spatial datasets, work within a map framework and think and understand in three-dimensions.
- Working knowledge of soil mechanics.
- Attention to detail, high level of numerical accuracy and good self-checking.
- Excellent report writing skills and communication skills.
- The primary place of work for the role is our Oxford office, with flexibility to working hours.
