Software Engineer Job Description

Title: Senior Embedded / Software Engineer

Reports to: Engineering Director

Job purpose:

Job Duties for a Senior Embedded / Software Engineer

The software engineer will be responsible for the development and implementation of software for specific applications and systems in additional to the introduction and maintenance of in-house software platforms. As new products are developed this role will be essential in assisting in the development of new hardware products also and input into these is key.

This development process can include preparation and creation of instructional technical documentation for software operation is also an important aspect of the role. There may also be a requirement to travel to and interact with customers and team members for support of the developed applications and prototype installations.


Skill Requirements

Development of electronic products, specifically embedded firmware typically in C and GUI software (Windows) typically in C#.

Input into the electronic design of the hardware platform.

Collaborate with colleagues to continuously evolve the product portfolio and deliver value to the business.

Where appropriate interface with customer representatives on customer applications and issues.

Proactively engage in furthering team and project performance, identifying and championing best practice processes. Willingness to branch into other areas of software engineering helping to further the capabilities of our products.

Taking responsibility for ensuring the longevity and maintenance any applications you develop.


The candidate must hold a good technical degree in electronics or similar.


  • C, C# software development within a quality system
  • Capable of understanding and supporting the design of electronic circuits.
  • Experience in developing and delivering products with communications technology - Modbus, RS-485, I2C, Wi-Fi.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • A track record of delivering complex scientific or engineering products
  • Competence in writing/managing specifications and test plans to ISO 9001.

Desirable skills

  • Familiarity with statistical techniques and software
  • An ability to look beyond the obvious when problem solving

Person profile:

  1. Must have an inquiring, logical mind, be tenacious and customer focussed.
  2. Must have a good understanding of software and product development.
  3. Must be commercially aware.
  4. Must have project management skills and have good communication skills, both written and spoken and be confident presenting and explaining complex technology.
  5. They will be senior - for instance perhaps on their 3 rd job or better - and able to communicate with and advise junior staff with industry best practice.
  6. Candidate should not be of the 'I have nothing to prove category', technology is an area where learning is continual, and they should be open to this.
  7. Candidate should have an inquisitive, problem-solving mind.
  8. As the department matures, they will be expected to contribute outside of their particular project(s).
