Danish energy firm Orsted have announced that the Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm has produced its first power. Once fully operational it will become the world’s largest operating offshore wind farm, capable of generating 1.32 GW of clean electricity.

The wind farm is located 89 kilometres off the UK’s east coast and covers anarea of roughly 462 km². Power will be transferred via 373 km of array cables to the OSS and RCS, which terminate at the onshore substation in Killingholme. Using 165 turbines from Siemens Gamesa it boasts a capacity of more than 1.3 gigawatts, which Orsted say will power over 2.3 million homes when complete.
