Wind turbine manufacturer, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, has officially inaugurated its new offshore facility in Taichung Harbor, Taiwan. This is an important milestone for the company given that it’s their first offshore wind nacelle plant outside of Europe.

The facility will now be starting regular operations, after having already completed Taiwan’s first locally assembled offshore wind turbine nacelle in early August 2021. Siemens Gamesa said its output would initially satisfy orders from Ørsted’s 900 megawatt Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind farm projects, with the potential for them to fully support future projects in Asia Pacific.

Aside from leading an offshore market in APAC, these developments signal positive change for the local community. They already have approximately 80 trained workers, through a partnership with the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, and as they ramp up production, they will continue to create new jobs and skills. In addition, these ongoing projects will positively impact the local supply chain capabilities due to increased investment.
