What Qualifications Do You Need to Work on a BESS Center Project?

Battery energy storage (BESS) projects are growing across the United States, and Nashville is seeing demand for skilled people to install and maintain them. If you are wondering whether your background fits, here is a practical look at what employers typically look for.

A note first: requirements vary by role and by project, and our recruiters will confirm what applies. This guide covers the common ground.

  1. A trade or technical background
Most installation roles draw on an electrical, mechanical, millwright or maintenance background. That might be an apprenticeship, a technical school program or several years working in industrial maintenance. Formal credentials help, but hands-on experience with electrical or mechanical equipment is what most hiring managers value.
  2. Safety training
Safety comes first on any large construction or installation site. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 training is widely recognized and often expected. Familiarity with lockout/tagout procedures and site safety practices is a strong advantage.
  3. Role-specific licenses and certifications
Some roles call for specific credentials. Electrical roles may require an electrical license or journeyman status, depending on the work. Material handling may call for forklift or equipment operation certificates, and rigging experience is useful where heavy equipment is positioned. If you are unsure whether yours apply, register and we will talk it through.
  4. Practical skills
    • Reading drawings, schematics and installation instructions
    • Torquing, aligning and assembling mechanical components
    • Terminating and labelling electrical connections
    • Fault finding and basic testing
    • Working accurately to a schedule and documenting your work
  5. The right working style
Installation teams are multi-disciplinary and move quickly. Reliability, clear communication and a willingness to learn from colleagues matter as much as any certificate.

Just starting out?

If you have recently completed a technical program or have around a year of field experience, you may still be a good fit. Prior experience with electrical or mechanical equipment is a plus, and we would rather hear from you than have you rule yourself out.

Next step

We are building a talent network in Nashville for upcoming BESS installation projects, with installation work starting in mid-November and further opportunities to follow. Register your interest and upload your CV here.
