We asked our network what's the biggest workforce risk to nuclear's delivery timeline. 56% said too few experienced engineers, more than three times any other answer. Retaining specialist talent came in at 18%, not enough new entrants at 17%, and competition from other sectors at just 8%, from 103 votes.
Nuclear is back as a mainstream grid strategy. It's driven by AI data center power demand, energy security policy and decarbonisation targets. But the same expansion driving that comeback is running headfirst into a workforce that isn't built to support it. The industry isn't short of investment or political will. It's short of engineers, and the shortage is structural, not temporary.
Nuclear power is one of the fastest-growing hiring categories anywhere in the global energy sector. Nuclear power, grids and storage accounted for roughly a quarter of all new power sector jobs created since 2019, part of a broader energy employment boom that saw the sector add over five million jobs globally between 2019 and 2024.
That growth has run straight into a hiring wall. More than half of the roughly 700 energy-related companies, unions and training institutions surveyed by the IEA reported critical hiring bottlenecks threatening to slow infrastructure delivery, delay projects and raise costs. Applied technical roles, including electricians, pipefitters, line workers, plant operators and nuclear engineers, are named specifically as being in especially short supply.
Every part of the energy sector is ageing, but nuclear and grid roles are ageing fastest. For every young worker entering nuclear, 1.7 experienced professionals are approaching retirement. That compares with 1.4 in grid roles and a sector-wide average of 1.2. Across the whole of energy in advanced economies, there are 2.4 workers nearing retirement for every worker under 25. Between now and 2035, two out of every three new hires across the entire energy sector will be needed just to replace retiring workers, before any net growth is accounted for.
Most of you pointed to too few experienced engineers as the biggest risk, and the numbers explain why. The problem isn't only retirements. It's what's coming in behind them. The number of students graduating with engineering degrees has fallen by around 25% since 2012, and nuclear represents only a small fraction of those remaining programmes. That leaves a shortage of professionals in the 10-to-15-year experience band specifically, the cohort that would normally be stepping into senior roles as the current generation retires. Fixing this by hiring alone isn't realistic. To prevent the global energy skills gap from widening further by 2030, the IEA estimates the number of new qualified entrants would need to rise by around 40%, a level current pipelines are nowhere near reaching.
18% of you flagged retention as the greatest risk, and it isn't only about attracting new entrants. Keeping existing talent is proving difficult too. According to the 2026 Global Energy Talent Index, 85% of energy professionals say they would consider changing roles, with career progression cited as the main driver. Professionals in transitional energy and power were approached about new roles an average of 6.26 times over the past year, up from 6.08 the year before. That's a workforce that's easy to poach from and hard to hold onto, a particular risk in nuclear, where institutional knowledge takes years to rebuild once it walks out the door.
None of this is fixed by recruitment budgets alone. Hiring can't outrun a graduate pipeline that's a quarter smaller than it was a decade ago, and promotion can't manufacture an experience band that was never built. Closing the gap requires:
Nuclear's comeback is real, and the demand behind it- AI, energy security, decarbonisation- isn't going away. Whether the industry can staff it is the question that will determine how fast that comeback happens.
