HSE Director – Solar & Battery Energy Storage
Location: Malaysia | Expression of Interest

We are inviting expressions of interest from experienced Health, Safety and Environment leaders for potential future opportunities with solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) developers in Malaysia. This advertisement is for talent pooling and does not represent a confirmed current vacancy.

An HSE Director in this setting would provide strategic leadership across the project lifecycle, from development and design through construction, commissioning and operations. The position would work closely with executive management, engineering teams, project directors and contractors to embed strong HSE standards across a growing renewable energy portfolio.

The role would involve:

  • Establishing and implementing HSE strategy, policies and management systems across solar and BESS projects.

  • Providing HSE oversight during project planning, contractor selection, construction, commissioning and operational handover.

  • Ensuring compliance with applicable Malaysian occupational safety, health and environmental requirements, alongside project and contractual obligations.

  • Setting clear expectations for EPC contractors, subcontractors and operations partners, with effective assurance and accountability.

  • Overseeing risk assessments and controls for electrical safety, battery fire hazards, lifting operations, work at height and other significant project risks.

  • Leading site inspections, audits and incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and lessons inform future work.

  • Developing emergency preparedness and response arrangements with site teams, contractors and relevant emergency services.

  • Overseeing environmental management, including waste, pollution prevention and implementation of project approval conditions.

  • Building and developing HSE teams while strengthening safety leadership across project and operational functions.

  • Reporting performance, emerging risks and improvement priorities to senior management.

Suitable candidates will bring:

  • Substantial HSE experience within renewable energy, power generation, utilities or major infrastructure, including senior leadership responsibility.

  • Experience overseeing construction and commissioning activities, ideally across multiple projects or locations.

  • Strong knowledge of Malaysian HSE requirements and experience working with relevant authorities.

  • A demonstrated ability to manage contractor performance and influence project leaders, engineers and executive stakeholders.

  • Experience implementing HSE management systems, conducting audits and leading incident investigations.

  • A relevant degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, environmental science or a related discipline.

  • Relevant professional HSE qualifications or registrations.

  • Strong communication skills in English; Bahasa Malaysia capability would be advantageous.

  • Willingness to travel to project sites within Malaysia.

Direct experience with utility-scale solar or BESS projects would be highly regarded. Candidates with strong transferable experience from other energy and infrastructure sectors are also encouraged to register their interest.

To express interest, please submit your CV, current location, notice period and a brief summary of the projects and HSE teams you have led. Suitable candidates may be contacted when a relevant opportunity arises.
