Field Service Engineer (5+ Years Experience)
Position Summary
A Field Service Engineer with proven, hands-on expertise in variable speed drives including LCI (Load Commutated Inverter) drive systems and excitation/AVR systems for synchronous motors or generators to independently lead commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical delivery in demanding industrial environments. This role requires someone who can work unsupervised, make sound engineering judgments in the field
Detailed Responsibilities
• Independently lead full commissioning lifecycle for Variable speed drives: pre-energization checks, controlled startup sequencing, load testing, and performance validation.
• Diagnose and resolve complex power electronics -stage faults: misfiring, commutation failure, snubber circuit degradation, gate driver malfunction.
• Configure and tune excitation/AVR systems: field forcing limits, PSS (Power System Stabilizer) parameters, protection thresholds (loss of excitation, over/under excitation).
• Interpret and troubleshoot using drive-specific diagnostic software or OEM software for LCI/excitation platforms
• Perform synchronization checks and verify synchronous motor pull-in/pull-out torque behaviour during startup.
• Lead and document Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), coordinating directly with client engineering teams.
• Conduct root-cause failure analysis (RCFA) on recurring faults; produce formal technical reports with corrective action recommendations.
• Provide technical mentorship to junior/graduate engineers on-site, including hands-on skills transfer.
• Interface directly with client plant engineers, operations teams, and third-party contractors as the primary technical representative on-site.
• Maintain compliance with electrical safety standards (arc flash, LOTO, confined space) and promote a zero-incident safety culture.
Required Qualifications
Education:
• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (required).
Experience (Must-Have):
• Minimum 5 years of direct, hands-on field experience specifically with drives and/or excitation systems for large synchronous motors
• Demonstrated experience commissioning drives in the MW-class power range (large synchronous motor applications: compressors, pumps, mills, or similar heavy industrial drivers).
• Hands-on troubleshooting experience with thyristor/SCR-based power conversion, and IGBT/PWM-based drives.
• Experience with excitation controller platforms (e.g., GE EX2100, Basler, Unitrol, or equivalent AVR systems).
Technical Skills:
• Strong grasp of power electronics fundamentals: commutation theory, harmonic distortion, DC link behavior, firing angle control.
• Proficiency reading and interpreting electrical schematics, logic diagrams, and P&IDs for drive/excitation systems.
• Experience with diagnostic instrumentation: oscilloscopes (capturing gate pulses/firing signals), power quality analyzers, thermal imaging.
• Working knowledge of motor protection relays and their interaction with excitation/drive protection schemes.
• Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus) as used in drive/excitation monitoring is a plus.
Soft Skills:
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision in high-pressure commissioning environments.
• Strong client-facing communication skills; comfortable leading technical discussions with client engineering teams.
• mentorship/coaching ability with junior staff.
• Fluent English (written and verbal) required; Arabic is a plus for regional client interface.
