Spencer Ogden is supporting a major international energy and infrastructure organisation in the appointment of a Contracts & Claims Manager for a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) EPC project.

This is a technically focused contracts and claims role, working at the interface of Project Management, Construction, Engineering, Planning, Procurement and Commercial/Contracts.

The Role

You will be responsible for the technical and commercial assessment, management and negotiation of change orders, claims and contractual matters throughout the EPC project lifecycle.

Key responsibilities include:

Managing and assessing change orders, variations and claims from customers, suppliers and subcontractors.

Identifying and documenting potential contractual entitlement and change-order opportunities.

Reviewing notices of delay, impediment and concern, assessing cause, contractual relevance, causation and impact on the works.

Assessing extensions of time, construction disruption and acceleration measures, including schedule and financial impacts.

Reviewing quantity changes, provisional items, measurements and scope changes.

Reviewing subcontractor additional cost claims and change-order proposals, including cost build-ups, original estimates and price adjustments.

Supporting the development of claims strategies and contractual responses, including back-to-back flow-down obligations.

Participating in and supporting change-order and claims negotiations.

Preparing contractual assessments, review reports, statements and supporting documentation.

Supporting disputes, escalations and supplier evaluations.

Maintaining the project change-order / claims tracker and relevant contractual correspondence.

Reviewing change orders against Scope of Work, technical specifications, Division of Responsibility, applicable standards and project requirements.

Working closely with Project Management, Construction, Planning, Engineering, Procurement and Project Controls.

Ensuring compliance with contractual notification, submission and approval deadlines.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Contracts, Claims or Change Order professional with a strong technical understanding of EPC and construction projects.

You will ideally have:

A degree in Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Construction, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Several years' experience in Contracts, Claims, Change Orders or a similar technical-commercial role.

Strong knowledge of construction contract law, including variations, delay/impediment notices and claims.

Experience working within EPC contract structures.

Strong understanding of cost assessment, change-order calculations, original cost estimates and price adjustments.

Experience assessing schedule impacts, delays, disruption and critical path.

Ideally, previous experience on BESS EPC, substation, grid connection or transmission projects, particularly involving Transmission System Operators (TSOs).

Strong analytical, organisational and negotiation skills.

The ability to independently assess complex technical and contractual matters and communicate them clearly.

Fluent German and English.

Experience with project/document management platforms such as SharePoint, Procore or Thinkproject.

Remote-based

12–18 month contract

Occasional on-site attendance for meetings as required
