Can Renewables Hiring Keep Pace With Big Tech’s Clean Power Deals?

Big Tech’s Clean Power Buying Spree

Corporate clean power buying is moving at a scale most workforces were not built for. We asked our LinkedIn audience whether renewables hiring can keep pace with deal volume. Of 54 votes, 37% said it depends on the role and 31% said hiring is already behind. Only 20% said it will catch up, and 11% said it is too early to call. Nearly four in five voters did not say yes.

What did Oracle and Google sign?

Oracle signed wind energy agreements across ten projects, expected to deliver more than 1.7GW of carbon-free energy to the Texas grid. The power will support its Abilene data center campus. Suppliers include Clearway Energy, Engie, RWE and Scout Clean Energy. The RWE agreement is a virtual power purchase agreement for 433MW from three wind farms in West Texas, and Engie will supply 568MW. Oracle did not disclose the capacity tied to the remaining agreements.

Google signed its largest carbon removal contract to date with enhanced rock weathering firm Terradot. It covers one million tons of near-term methane impact by 2030 and one million tons of carbon removal by 2040. The project spans more than 200,000 hectares of rice farmland in Southern Brazil.

Why are hyperscalers buying at this scale?

Targets are setting the pace. Oracle aims to match 100% of its AI data center electricity use with carbon-free electricity by 2035. It also issued a request for proposals for 2GW of new renewable capacity in New Mexico, open to solar, wind, geothermal and other technologies, with priority for projects that can deliver on an accelerated timeline. Google describes its Terradot agreement as a template that other buyers and governments can follow.

What did our poll say about hiring?

The most popular answer was that it depends on the role. That matches how we see the market. Corporate procurement does not create demand for one type of professional. It creates demand across the project lifecycle, and each stage has a different talent profile.

Existing assets need operators and asset managers. The RWE agreement draws on wind farms that are already operating, so it brings forward demand for people who run and optimise them. New capacity, like the New Mexico request for proposals, needs developers, builders and commissioning teams. A carbon removal project on the scale of Terradot’s brings in specialists in geochemistry, agriculture and field operations. These are our observations from the recruitment market, not survey data, but the 31% who say hiring is already behind suggest many of you see the same pressure.

What should developers and buyers do now?

Start with the pipeline, not the vacancy. The organisations in the strongest position are those that map their signed and planned capacity against the roles they will need, stage by stage, before construction or operations begin. A mix of permanent hires for long-term operational capability and contractors for peak delivery periods gives teams room to flex as projects move forward.

As advisors to developers, asset owners and corporate buyers, we help clients do exactly that: scope the workforce behind the pipeline, and plan for the roles that are hardest to fill first.
