The Global Data Center Market: Reading the Big Picture

Zoom out far enough and a single story emerges from this month's headlines: data center growth is no longer a regional phenomenon; it's a genuinely global one, and every region is being shaped by the same three forces at once.

The first is scale. Europe is on track for 20% capacity growth this year to 13GW. Asia Pacific's asset values are projected to exceed $950 billion by 2030. Italy's grid connection requests alone have grown almost a hundredfold in five years, from 1GW to over 95GW. Wherever you look, the growth curve is steep, and the capital commitments are enormous.

The second is power innovation, and it's happening everywhere at once, not just in one market. In Texas, Fermi America and Blue Origin are combining gas turbines with small modular nuclear reactors. In international waters, Optimal Transit has unveiled Kraaken, a floating AI data center concept that generates its own power from ocean thermal energy while producing 30 million litres of fresh water daily through desalination. Across Europe, Ireland is deploying ultracapacitor systems for grid resilience while Denmark is reusing waste heat to power greenhouses. The common thread is that operators everywhere are having to become energy companies, not just tenants of the grid.

The third is connectivity. This month alone saw progress on the Aurora cable linking New Jersey to Denmark, the Echo cable linking California to Singapore via Guam and Jakarta, a new direct link between Hong Kong and Cambodia, and MDM's Narwhal systems connecting Ireland to the US. Every one of these projects is quietly reinforcing the same point: the world's data centers are being built as a single, interconnected network, not as isolated regional markets.

What ties all three forces together is talent. Behind every gigawatt of new capacity, every novel power system and every subsea cable landing is a workforce that didn't exist at this scale five years ago, spanning grid engineering, nuclear licensing, marine cable installation and AI infrastructure design. The organisations winning in this market aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest capital budgets. They're the ones building the talent pipeline fast enough to deploy that capital.
