With more than two decades of construction management experience spanning three continents, Varun Mahajan has led major developments across commercial, institutional, hospitality, infrastructure, and data centre sectors. Today, he’s applying that global perspective to projects that drive the renewable energy transition - infusing sustainability into every stage of the build process.
A career built on evolution, not accident
Varun’s entry into the renewable energy sector wasn’t a dramatic career pivot, but a steady evolution of his values and expertise. His background in traditional construction laid the foundation, but it was the broader environmental and industry shifts that ultimately drew him in.
“A strong personal or societal commitment to combat climate change was the main reason I transitioned from traditional construction to renewable energy alternatives,” he explains.
As he began managing more projects with sustainability components, Varun became increasingly driven by what he saw as a unique opportunity to combine traditional project delivery with climate-conscious innovation.
“I found a deeper meaning in building infrastructure that contributes to a sustainable future and contributes to society.”
Working on renewable energy builds in the Middle East exposed him to new technologies like floating solar and offshore wind, innovations that underscored the exciting challenges of the sector.
“Rapid advancements in energy tech create new opportunities all the time. Staying on top of these changes is part of the job - and part of the appeal.”
But the shift wasn’t without its hurdles. He recalls grappling with complex regulations, remote project locations, and the need to understand not just engineering but energy systems, environmental science, and public policy.
“Success in this space requires interdisciplinary knowledge. And since this approach is still new to many in traditional construction, it can be a real challenge.”
Purpose-driven progress
For Varun, the move into renewable energy also unlocked a new sense of purpose. It wasn’t just about delivering successful projects; it was about making a tangible contribution to the world.
“Exposure to renewable projects gave me a sense of pride - this is a once-in-a-generation shift in global infrastructure.”
His passion for sustainable construction reached a milestone when he led the delivery of a LEED Platinum-certified office complex in a major Indian city. Spanning more than 150,000 square feet, the project raised the bar for sustainable real estate in the region.
“We integrated everything - from smart HVAC systems and energy-efficient glazing to rooftop solar and greywater recycling. Every decision was aligned with LEED criteria, without compromising budget, timeline, or aesthetics.”
Bridging the gap between ambition and execution
Varun is no stranger to the tension between sustainability goals and financial constraints, a reality many energy professionals face. One of his proudest problem-solving moments came when he successfully made the case for an energy-efficient HVAC system by creating a detailed cost-benefit analysis with his team.
“Budget versus sustainability is one of the biggest challenges. But when you present a clear plan that shows reduced operational and maintenance costs over time, it becomes easier for stakeholders to commit.”
Advice for the next generation of leaders
Having worked across markets and technologies, Varun is eager to share insights with those just beginning their journey in energy.
“Start by understanding the fundamentals of construction, energy systems, and sustainability principles - and get certified. Then, gain international experience and collaborate with environmental engineers, consultants, and regulatory bodies.”
And most importantly, don’t let inexperience hold you back.
“Don’t wait to be an expert before you take action. Start learning, start contributing, and grow into the leader the sector needs.”
Shaping the future with smart tech
Today, Varun is particularly energised by the emergence of Smart Grids - digital energy networks that allow for two-way energy flow and smarter consumption.
“Smart grids reduce waste, manage demand more effectively, and integrate renewables in a way we’ve never seen before. We’re piloting this on one of our projects right now - it’s a game-changer.”
He’s also keeping a close eye on how AI is being used to optimise energy systems, from predicting renewable energy output to improving building efficiency.
Driving change from within
At TD, Varun plays a key role in leading the company’s Green Construction Commitment, an initiative that embeds sustainability into the DNA of every commercial project.
“It’s a cross-departmental effort that ensures we prioritise sustainability from procurement all the way through to project handover.”
Inspired by collective leadership
When asked who has influenced him most, Varun doesn’t point to a single mentor. Instead, he draws inspiration from the organisations leading by example in the transition to greener practices.
“The companies breaking away from traditional models and embracing green technology - they inspire me. It’s their commitment to doing things the right way: ethically, sustainably, and with people in mind.”

As the energy sector continues to evolve, Varun believes the industry must go beyond innovation - it must lead with intent.
“Green technology and sustainability are no longer optional - they are the foundation of a resilient, forward-thinking future. As we confront the challenges of climate change and resource scarcity, our ability to innovate, collaborate, and lead with purpose will define our legacy.”
