SO Careers - A day in the life of a Spencer Ogden recruitment Consultant, Joe Baggs

Have you wondered what it’s like being a recruitment consultant?

Joe Baggs, from our Power Contract team in London joined Spencer Ogden in June 2019 and tells us about his experience so far…

What does your typical day at SO consist of?

Everyday can vary, it’s exciting because you get to speak to different people every single day. Although the days are different it is important that I have a plan to my day to make sure I get the most out of it:

7:30 -  Plan my day

8:15-11:00 – Client calls

11:00 – Quick break and a sausage roll

11:00 – 13:00 – Admin work (adding new contacts, formatting spec/cv’s, replying to emails, booking meetings etc.)

13:00 – 17:00 – Client and candidate calls

17:00 – 18:00 -  Begin creating my list and planning for the next day

What is the most rewarding part of the job at SO?

When I have completed a successful pitch, there is nothing more rewarding that pitching to a client and it being well received.

Not only will you receive positive feedback, you can also expect commission and other rewards based on your performance throughout the year.

What are some of the challenges faced during your time at SO?

Managing difficult candidate processes and placement fall outs have been challenging for me. However, I have had the support that I’ve needed to help me through these situations, learnt from them and been able to manage it if that same challenge has arisen again.

Why did you choose recruitment?

Before joining SO I worked at an Estate Agent doing sales. It was a clear move into recruitment as I already had a lot of the traits that were needed to work within recruitment and I would never have to work a weekend again!

I wanted to work in an environment is more challenging, fast-paced and stimulating which recruitment is as you learn to become a market expert.

What advice do you have for anyone that wants to work in the recruitment industry?

My advice would be if you enjoy talking to people then this is the job for you! I would be prepared for the first year to be rocky and there could be some uncertainty but if you keep working hard, the highs outweigh the challenging times!
