Director, Thermal Development

Director, Thermal Development

Industry: Renewable & Thermal Energy Infrastructure

Type: Full-Time, Exempt

A leading U.S. energy infrastructure developer is seeking a Director of Thermal Development to lead the company’s efforts in developing and delivering large-scale thermal power generation projects. Backed by a top-tier investment group and actively expanding across multiple U.S. markets, this organization is at the forefront of the clean energy transition — developing, constructing, and operating major renewable, thermal, and storage assets nationwide.

This is a high-impact role for a seasoned developer who thrives in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment and has experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder energy projects through the full lifecycle — from concept and permitting through financing and construction.

The Role

The Director, Thermal Development will oversee a portfolio of thermal energy projects, managing all aspects of development including site control, permitting, engineering coordination, interconnection, and commercial structuring. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external consultants to advance projects from greenfield inception through construction handoff.

This position reports directly to a senior development executive and offers the opportunity to help shape one of the most exciting and diversified energy platforms in the U.S.

Key Responsibilities

Lead development of early- and late-stage thermal power generation projects through construction commencement.

Manage project portfolios including budgets, schedules, risk assessments, and overall development strategy.

Coordinate cross-functional efforts in land, engineering, permitting, interconnection, and legal.

Oversee discretionary permitting and entitlement efforts with local, state, and federal agencies.

Support negotiation of major project contracts, including EPC, O&M, interconnection, and offtake agreements.

Manage third-party consultants, contractors, and due diligence efforts.

Collaborate with M&A and business development teams to evaluate and acquire new project opportunities.

Provide leadership in project prioritization and decision-making across multiple markets.

Qualifications

Required:

7+ years of experience in energy project development (thermal, gas, or hybrid generation preferred).

Proven success leading complex projects through full development cycle to NTP or construction.

Strong understanding of permitting, land acquisition, engineering, interconnection, and project financing processes.

Exceptional organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Environmental Science, or related field.

Willingness to work in one of the listed office locations at least 3 days per week and travel up to 30%.

Preferred:

Experience developing combined heat and power (CHP), thermal hybrid, or flexible generation assets.

Familiarity with power purchase agreements (PPAs), EPC contracting, and financing structures.

Advanced proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and project management tools.
