Pre-Construction Project Estimator

Job Title: Pre-Construction Project Estimator
Location: Remote - Or around offices in Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix
Start Date: May 22nd

Key Responsibilities
:

  • Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for utility-scale solar PV, wind, and energy storage projects during the pre-construction phase.
  • Analyze project drawings, specifications, and other documents to develop a complete understanding of project scope and required materials, labor, and equipment.
  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes; assess proposals for scope, completeness, and cost competitiveness.
  • Develop budgets and conceptual estimates at various stages of project development (feasibility, preliminary, definitive).
  • Collaborate with internal teams (engineering, procurement, development) to incorporate design and procurement strategies into cost models.
  • Identify and evaluate potential project risks and suggest cost-effective mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain and update historical cost databases and unit pricing information.
  • Assist with value engineering exercises to optimize project cost and performance.
  • Prepare professional and comprehensive estimate reports for internal leadership and external clients.
  • Support the business development team in RFP responses and bid proposals.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3–7 years of estimating experience, preferably in utility-scale renewable energy, electrical construction, or heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of construction means, methods, and sequencing, especially in solar, wind, and storage projects.
  • Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HeavyBid, InEight, RSMeans) and MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience interpreting civil, structural, and electrical engineering plans and specifications.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills; attention to detail is critical.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of EPC contracting models and project delivery methods is a plus.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with permitting, environmental, and interconnection processes for renewable projects.
  • Understanding of current market trends in renewable energy technologies and construction practices.
  • Estimating experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) is highly desirable.
