Project Manager

Due to an increased volume of work, a vacancy has arisen for a Project Manager within Generation Projects. The Project Manager will be responsible for managing and delivering power plant overhaul projects in line with defined processes and procedures. A major hydro power plant overhaul is scheduled for 2027, and a Project Manager is sought to oversee the works, engaging early in development and planning and managing the project through to successful completion.


Key Responsibilities


While the Project Manager may rotate across Generation Projects and work on multiple technologies, the initial focus will be on the delivery of overhaul projects.


Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Acting as the single point of contact within EMP for assigned projects


Managing overall project delivery, including safety, schedule, cost, and contractor management


Taking full ownership of the project lifecycle, from early-stage development and design safety through approval, execution, completion, and handover to operations


Leading technical feasibility assessments and defining overhaul scope and delivery strategies


Managing the tender process, including preparation, evaluation, and negotiation, in line with agreed procurement strategies


Preparing project technical deliverables required for financial and governance approval


Producing detailed progress reports, key performance indicators, and project status updates


Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, including operations teams, technical specialists, finance, consultants, and contractors


Providing regular updates and recommendations to the Programme Manager, identifying risks and implementing mitigation measures


Capturing lessons learned and contributing to the improvement and standardisation of project delivery processes


Leading the safe execution of overhaul works, ensuring schedules and budgets are proactively managed and controlled


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential


Minimum of 7 years’ experience in the energy sector or a related industry


Strong commercial awareness and stakeholder management capability


Experience using a recognised project management delivery methodology or equivalent


Proven track record of delivering infrastructure projects on time and within budget


Significant experience managing procurement of services and equipment, including technical specifications, invitations to tender, and tender evaluations


Strong understanding of both commercial and technical aspects of project design and construction


Excellent communication, presentation, and report-writing skills


Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate high-performing project teams


Desirable


Understanding of the business case for relevant technologies, particularly thermal generation, BESS, and synchronous compensators


Knowledge of statutory project safety and design management processes


Good understanding of commercial contracts and contract management


Experience with power plant overhaul projects


Qualifications

Essential


Level 8 engineering degree in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent relevant experience


Desirable


Formal project management qualification


Base Location


The primary work location for this role will be at a hydro power station site. The role will also require mobilisation to other generation sites undergoing overhaul, with frequency agreed with the line manager and varying as project requirements evolve.


Occasional attendance at central office locations may be required. Travel, accommodation, and related expenses associated with attendance at office locations will not be reimbursed.


Business travel expenses that are not normally incurred at the candidate’s usual place of work will be reimbursed, subject to prior agreement with the line manager. All expense claims must be submitted via the contractor’s agency. Mileage rates do not apply.

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible


Duration: 24 months


Safety Requirements


Contractors must comply with all applicable health and safety regulations and site-specific requirements, and must follow all instructions from designated line management.


Requirements include:


Wearing full PPE as required, including arc-resistant PPE where applicable


Safety footwear compliant with EN ISO standards


Valid Safe Pass and manual handling training


Use of unbranded hard hats and hearing protection where required


Additional training such as confined space, working at height, and asbestos awareness as necessary


Standard PPE items such as safety boots, gloves, and eye protection must be provided by the contractor.

The successful candidate must have access to a personal mobile phone, laptop/PC, and reliable internet connection


The candidate must be capable of engaging professionally and effectively throughout the duration of the engagement
